Tomioka Silk Mill

World Heritage Site.

The Tomioka Silk Mill was a large scale instrumental silk mill built by the government and was the largest silk mill in the world at that time.

The construction of the Tomioka Silk Mill was carried out by French leader Paul Brunat. In the weaving mill, where raw silk was taken from cocoons, apprentice women from all over the country worked, and full-scale instrumental reeling began.

In June 2014, the site was registered as a World Heritage Site.
